How to read a herbal cosmetic label in Canada
By ShreyCare Organics · Published 12 October 2026
Compare net quantity, full ingredients, intended use and directions when shopping for herbal hair and skin care.
Start with the product’s intended use
A botanical ingredient name tells you something about a blend, but it does not describe the whole finished product. Check whether the product is intended for hair, face, body or beard care. Read its directions and cautions before deciding how it fits your routine.
Distinguish highlights from the full list
An ingredient highlight is a short explanation of selected ingredients. The full label ingredient list uses INCI names and is the place to check the complete formulation. Health Canada’s cosmetic labelling guide explains this distinction and the ingredient information required on retail labels. If a website only supplies highlights, ask for the current label before relying on it as the full ingredient list.
Compare quantities as well as prices
Look for the net quantity and metric unit. Compare oils using the same volume unit and powders using the same weight unit. A bottle and a powder pouch can each count as one shipping container while holding different quantities of product. Packaging photos can be useful, but check that the label belongs to the current product and size.
Keep the label with your routine
Follow the current product’s approved directions rather than treating every herbal blend the same way. Check cautions and storage instructions, and ask the seller about information that is missing or unclear. Keep the packaging and your order confirmation so you can identify the product if you need help.
